Biochar and carbon removal: the evidence chain

Making char, storing carbon and issuing a verified removal are distinct steps.

A physical carbon product is not automatically a carbon-removal credit. The case for durable removal depends on the feedstock, production process, emissions, end use and the requirements of the applicable accounting framework.

Plan the evidence before the plant

Verra’s public biochar methodology work covers soil and non-soil applications and includes requirements around quantification and additionality. Methodologies evolve. A developer should verify the applicable version and project requirements before relying on credit revenue.

Follow the carbon through the project

A practical project review asks where the feedstock came from, how it was processed, how much qualifying carbon remains, and what happens after delivery. Production emissions, transport and other relevant lifecycle effects belong in the evaluation. A gross quantity of carbon is not the same as a net, verified removal.

  • Maintain traceable feedstock and production records.
  • Identify product sampling and laboratory requirements.
  • Document the destination and intended lifetime of the carbon.
  • Assign responsibility for monitoring, verification and claims.
  • Clarify who owns any environmental attributes and avoid overlapping claims.

Build a business with disciplined assumptions

Our suggested commercial approach is to separate physical-product economics from prospective carbon revenue. Test the project against conservative assumptions and identify the milestones that must be achieved before contracted revenue can be relied on.

Nova is interested in developing projects that pair useful carbon products with a credible evidence trail. We do not represent this website’s concepts as registered projects or issued credits. Project-specific claims should follow the applicable review and verification process.
